We’re still waiting

We are still awaiting an official response to our complaint to Anglesey Council Planning Enforcement about the breach of planning by Halen Môn which was submitted over 2 months ago. We wanted to wait for an official response before escalating this issue to the next level within Wales and the UK level but we will now be escalating this case off the back of no response or support at all from within Anglesey Council.

This is a shocking and appalling situation for all the Anglesey residents who are being affected by this issue and have asked for information or feedback but have received nothing at all!

We have been informed that the Anglesey Environmental Protection Department have not received any complaints about the smoke so they have not felt the need to come for further assessment of smoke nuisance claims. We are asking you to write to them please with your concerns, as the voice from our small community alone does not seem to be sufficient for them to follow up on our concerns over the effect of exposure to this smoke on public health. You can also write to the Anglesey Council Planning Department directly to copal about their decision. Write to Dewi Jones the Chief Planning Officer, Isle of Anglesey Council on:  DewiJones@ynysmon.gov.uk. He is officially responsible for all planning decisions across Anglesey but as yet he has failed to respond to any communication sent by residents or anyone else about this issue.

If you write to him we are asking you to demand an explanation as to how and why Halen Môn were granted full planning permission in July 2022 to build an even larger smokery without any prior testing of all the constituents of the wood smoke, without any mitigation measures to reduce the contents of the smoke – as inhalation of wood smoke is known to be a risk to public health – and without any ongoing measures to monitor or limit smoke production.

We know that many people have written in to object to the planning decision before it was passed but they received no response and based on this we are demanding transparency on how the decision was made to grant this planning, as the process of this decision-making should be available in the public domain in light of there being public objections to it.

We want to know how the decision for planning was granted to build a larger smokery without any official public or community consultation, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the Anglesey Coastal Path where hundreds of thousand of members of the public will potentially be affected by this smoke every year, yet no measures are in place to remove the most toxic contents of this smoke or to even monitor it?

Roeddem am aros am ymateb swyddogol cyn codi’r mater hwn i’r lefel nesaf o fewn Cymru a’r DU ond byddwn nawr yn uwchgyfeirio’r achos hwn ar ôl dim ymateb na chefnogaeth o gwbl o fewn Cyngor Môn.

We have now successfully obtained the official planning documents for the Halen Môn smokery – these documents should be readily available on the public domain, but they were extremely difficult to get hold of

Specialists have viewed the planning documents on the planning portal for the design of the smokery and flue and they have advised of a discrepancy between approved height of 9m and what is in operation on site of a lower height, which could explain why we are being so badly affected by the smoke. We have also been advised of other possible breaches. This matter is now being addressed by relevant parties including planning enforcement, and we are awaiting further advice.
